The screen fetches what it will need

Whenever the playlist changes, the display works through it one file at a time and stores each one locally. One at a time on purpose: a kiosk has hours to spare but not bandwidth, and a dozen parallel video downloads would starve the slide that's currently on screen.

Files are kept, not re-downloaded

Uploads get a permanent address that never points at different bytes, so a file the screen already holds can be trusted forever. It survives reloads and power cuts, and the screen never spends bandwidth fetching something twice.

The cache matches the playlist

Remove a slide and its file is dropped from the screen; add one and it's pulled down. The device's storage is kept equal to what you've published, so it never fills up with content you retired months ago.

Caching solves playback, not physics. Here is what genuinely needs a connection — so you can decide with the real picture rather than a sales one.

New content waits for the connection

Anything you publish while a screen is offline reaches it when it reconnects, not before. The screen keeps showing what it already had — which is the right failure, but it is a delay.

Live apps need live data

Your own photos and videos are cached. A weather or clock app that pulls fresh data is a different thing — it can't invent a forecast it hasn't been able to fetch, and caching one would just show yesterday's.

Setting up a screen needs a connection

Pairing a new display and loading its content for the first time both happen over the network. Offline playback covers a screen that's already running, not one you're installing during an outage.
